Rebels of Sankofa

With a mission of inspiring and empowering passion to elevate people, Run The World is a community empowerment brand that was founded in 2013. The brand believes in looking back and giving back to their community with their passion and talents and in early November, RTW was able to do just that.

On Friday Nov. 3rd 2017 Run the World Clothing and Launch Thy Vision by Recherché brought the community together at Oakland Boutique “Urban Stitch” to celebrate the new RTW fall/winter collection “Rebels ofSankofa.” The event’s theme was The Rebels of Sankofa Express, a train theme that would take attendees on a journey through time. The goal of this journey was to educate the community on the history of Black people migrating to Oakland from the South during WWII.  This was done using various art forms such as a short play, a live art gallery, and a powerful original poem by Brooklyn artist Najee Omar. Each of the show’s participants wore different Rebels of Sankofa collection items as they related to the different time periods highlighted in the time traveling train.

Their ultimate goal was to inform the community on how Black families were able to migrate from the South to Northern California and the laws and policies that made modern-day gentrification manifest. Ultimately, they wanted to provide historical context but also wanted people to understand what it means to Rebel against all odds as a community regardless of what has been set up by our oppressors.
